I have to concur with the Gringo and erter on this one with D is correct and dynamic binding has been deprecated in esxi 5 as shown in that document link from gringo.

I think this reading of static binding should explain why. First my explanation of how i read the line on static binding and what it means…

static binding assigns the port to the VM when the VM is ASSIGNED to the dvPort group. this is done via the vm’s settings with a pull down to assign it to a dvport group same location you find the network setting for a a virtual machine port group on a standard switch. (vm network virtual machine port group). Also note how they say the vm has to be manually removed from the dvPort group.. ie, same method as adding. the vm settings.

    Static binding

When you connect a virtual machine to a port group configured with static binding, a port is immediately assigned and reserved for it, guaranteeing connectivity at all times. The port is disconnected only when the virtual machine is removed from the port group. You can connect a virtual machine to a static-binding port group only through vCenter Server.

Note: Static binding is the default setting, recommended for general use.

According to the vmware doc linked by gringo and scott, both Dynamic and Ephemeral are correct.

“In a port group configured with dynamic binding, a port is assigned to a virtual machine only when the virtual machine is powered on and its NIC is in a connected state.”

“In a port group configured with ephemeral binding, a port is created and assigned to a virtual machine by the host when the virtual machine is powered on and its NIC is in a connected state.”
