    Explanation:
    Check Cluster Compliance
A cluster may be checked for compliance with a host profile or for specific cluster requirements and settings.
    Procedure
    1
In the Host and Clusters view, select the cluster on which you want to run the compliance check.
    2
In the Profile Compliance tab, click Check Compliance Now to check the cluster’s compliance with both the host profile that is attached to this cluster and the cluster requirements, if any.

The cluster is checked for compliance with specific settings for hosts in the cluster, such as DRS, HA, and DPM. For example, it may check if vMotion is enabled. The compliance status for the cluster requirements is updated. This check is performed even if a host profile is not attached to the cluster.

If a host profile is attached to the cluster, the cluster is checked for compliance with the host profile. The compliance status for the host profile is updated.
    3
(Optional) Click Description next to the Cluster Requirements for a list of the specific cluster requirements.
    4
(Optional) Click Description next to Host Profiles for a list of the specific host profile compliance checks.
    5
(Optional) Click Change to change the host profile that is attached to the cluster.
    6
(Optional) Click Remove to detach the host profile that is attached to the cluster.
If the cluster is not compliant, the profile must be applied separately to each host within the cluster.

How do I tell if my environment is ready for Fault Tolerance?
The VMware SiteSurvey Tool is used to check your environment for compliance with VMware Fault Tolerance. It can be downloaded at http://www.vmware.com/download/shared_utilities.html.

xaverio, can you post a link to your source? was it from vmware?

i found a kb article explaining how a profile cluster checks the following..
it reports ft logging disabled if fault tolerance is enabled. So in order to report this, it checks for FT.

    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1017471

Cluster Compliance is checked against a pre-defined set of requirements. These requirements vary depending on whether you have VMware High Availability (HA), VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), or both enabled on your cluster. For example, you see the error FT logging is not enabled if Fault Tolerance (FT) is enabled, but FT logging is not.

You can view the set of requirements by clicking Description in the Profile Compliance tab in vCenter Server.

If both HA and DRS are enabled, ensure that:
•FT logging NIC speed is at least 1000 Mbps.
•At least one shared datastore exists.
    •FT logging is enabled.
•VMotion NIC speed is at least 1000 Mbps.
•All the hosts in the cluster have the same build for Fault Tolerance.
•The host hardware supports Fault Tolerance.
    •VMotion is enabled.
If only DRS is enabled, ensure that:

•VMotion NIC speed is at least 1000 Mbps.
    •VMotion is enabled.
•At least one shared datastore exists.
If only HA is enabled, ensure that:

•FT logging NIC speed is at least 1000 Mbps.
•At least one shared datastore exists.
    •FT logging is enabled.
•VMotion NIC speed is at least 1000 Mbps.
•All the hosts in the cluster have the same build for Fault Tolerance.
•The host hardware supports Fault Tolerance.
    •VMotion is enabled.
The host profile that you attach for the cluster is only used for checking Host Profile Compliance and has no bearing on Cluster Requirement Compliance. If your ESX host is showing as Noncompliant for Cluster Requirement Compliance, ensure that it meets the above requirements.

        According to this link…”http://searchsystemschannel.techtarget.com/feature/VSphere-Fault-Tolerance-requirements-and-FT-logging”

Another method for checking to see if your hosts meet the FT requirements is to use the vCenter Server Profile Compliance tool. To check using this method just select your cluster in the left pane of the vSphere Client, and then in the right pane select the Profile Compliance tab. Click the Check Compliance Now link and it will check your hosts for compliance, including FT. Before you enable FT, be aware of one important limitation: VMware currently recommends that you do not use FT in a cluster that consists of a mix of ESX and ESXi hosts. This is because ESX hosts might become incompatible with ESXi hosts for FT purposes after they are patched, even when patched to the same level. This is a result of the patching process and will be resolved in a future release so that compatible ESX and ESXi versions are able to interoperate with FT even though patch numbers do not match exactly. Until this is resolved, you will need to take this into consideration if you plan to use FT, and make sure you adjust your clusters that will have FT-enabled VMs so that they consist of only ESX or ESXi hosts and not both. See VMware Knowledge Base article 1013637 (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1013637) for more information on this.

so the correct answer is D because Profile compliance check for FT and question is asked what feature is NOT checked by this ….

Actually, one can attach a host profile to the cluster and it will check for it as well. When I click on it in my own vSphere, I see references to checks for Fault Tolerance, vMotion and Host Profiles. So I would choose DRS. I’m guessing the intent behind the question is to show that although this compliance check looks to see if all the vMotion requirements are met in order for DRS to function, it does not actually check if the DRS cluster is balanced or even functional. So by process of elimination, the only answer left to me is DRS, option C.

    The question says:

“Which features REQUIREMENTS are not checked by this?”

The sitesurvey tool checks for FT requirements, not the profile compliance.

I would find it hard to believe that they named the tool “Profile Compliance”, but that it doesn’t check host profile compliance.

  5. Budzi says:

OK, so I have a vCenter 5.0.0 with one cluster. When I go to Cluster, click on tab Profile Compliance and then click on Description, I get the following:

The following compliance checks are performed:
Validate that Fault Tolerancelogging NIC speed is at least 1000 Mbps.
Validate that at least one shared datastore exists
Validate that Fault Tolerance logging is enabled.
Validate that VMotion NIC speed is at least 1000 Mbps.
Validate that all the hosts in the cluster have the same build for Fault Tolerance
Validate that the host hardware supports Fault Tolerance.
    Validate that VMotion is enabled.

As I can see no DRS or Host Profiles are mentioned, but I guess you need a host profile in order to Check for compliance against a host profile (I get a warning: “There is no host profile attached to this cluster. Click here to attach a host profile to the cluster”).

So my answer would be C – DRS.

    Hope this helps.
