  1. Franc says:

System State backup to Azure is now possible.

In this article from 31 May 2016 it states :

    ——————————————————————————–

Windows Server Backup can be used within a virtual machine environment in the same manner that it is used on a physical server to provide backup and recovery services. It can also be used from within a Windows Azure virtual machine for Bare Metal Backup & Recovery, System State Backup & Recovery, File Folder Backup and recovery.

That’s a pretty weird bit of text (I’m having a pop at MS not Franc).

For a start it’s talking about Windows Server Backup not Azure Backup.

The first sentence says: “Windows Server Backup can be used within a virtual machine environment in the same manner that it is used on a physical server to provide backup and recovery services”.

So what? Everyone knows that, and it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Azure.

The second sentence says WSB (not Azure Backup) “can also be used from within a Windows Azure virtual machine for Bare Metal Backup & Recovery, System State Backup & Recovery, File Folder Backup and recovery”.

If I had to guess, it means that WSB can be used, probably to on premise storage, to get around limitations in Azure Backup like no system state backups.

I’m happy to be corrected but it reads to me like system state backup to Azure is still impossible.

For now I’d say stick with the provided correct answer on the screenshot.

As on this May 2017 article, Microsoft are STILL referring to System State backup to Azure as a ‘Preview’ feature!

    https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/windows-server-system-state-backup-azure/

So although as I write this today (June 2017) it is technically possible to do a SS backup to the cloud, because they’re still calling it a ‘Preview’ feature – probably best to assume that means it ain’t gonna be on the exam question yet!

    Just my 2 cents…

    1. Chris says:

Probably a good idea. Also when I was playing with Azure Online Backup about a month ago, the System State Backup was consistently failing on a DC I was running it on. I didn’t spend much time playing around with it, so might have been a config issue (DC running on VMWare Player), but I suspect it may not have all the bugs worked out yet.
