I realize the Legacy Network adapter is “not connected” (should be connected to a virtual switch) but I also see the BIOS set to boot from CD (should be set to boot from Legacy Network Adapter). So there are actually 2 correct answers? I guess you might complete the Legacy Network Adapter setup before changing the boot order in the BIOS.

You can t boot to PXE using the legacy adapter, so even if you connect it, you won t be able to boot on it!

I guess it s a mistake, as the boot order need to be modified! And a network adapter is already connected!

Just boot on network adapter first, it would works fine.

This a generation 1 VM (see BIOS not Firmware) so only legacy network adapter support PXE boot in generation 1 VM. Before to change Startup order in BIOS you need to connect the network to one vSwitch.

You can do this in one of two way: connect the Legacy Adapter to a switch and then change the boot order. Or change the boot order and then connect the Legacy Adapter to a switch. I used to changing the BIOS first but it makes sense to connect the Legacy Adapter first and then changed the boot order. I guest changing the boot order first without realizing the Legacy Adapter isn’t connecting to anything will involve wasted time to re-check the settings. I vote for “Legacy Adapter”

Legacy adaptor, the reason behind the “boot CD Drive” is because the VM will switch through the boot devices until it reaches PXE. So it doesnt state a CD is in the drive (it will skip to HDD), no bootable OS (it will skip to USB or PXE).

so legacy is the most important option here, forget the first boot device.
