You are the Office 365 administrator for your company. You manage an on-premises Microsoft Exchange
Server 2003 environment that has 500 users and an externally-hosted Exchange environment that has 500
users. The hosted Exchange environment does not allow Outlook Anywhere connectivity. You do not have
administrative access to all mailboxes in the hosted environment.
You plan to migrate and consolidate both environments into Office 365.
You have the following migration requirements:
Migrate on-premises mailboxes in batches by department.
Migrate email, calendar, and contact items from the on-premises environment.
Migrate only email from the hosted environment.
In the table below, identify the migration type that must be used for each environment. Make only one selection
in each column. Each correct selection is worth one point.

Answer:

Explanation:
For the migration of the on-premise Exchange 2003 mailboxes, we can use a staged migration.
In a staged Exchange migration, mailboxes in your on-premises Exchange organization are migrated to
Exchange Online in batches. A staged Exchange migration is a good option if your current on-premises email
organization and migration goals meet the following conditions:For the migration of the hosted Exchange mailboxes, we can use an IMAP migration.
In an IMAP migration, the contents of users’ mailboxes on an IMAP messaging system are migrated to their
Exchange Online mailboxes. Here are some requirements and considerations for using an IMAP migration:

I’m confused. In my Exam Ref for 70-347 in Table 4-2 Migration type comparison it says Cutover is for less than 2000 mailboxes. And also that Staged migration is for Exchange 2007 only (and for Cutover it’s Exchange 2007+). So that leaves only IMAP for both the on-prem and the hosted Exchange solutions. Who can verify?

    The answer is wrong.

    The correct answer is:

    – On-Premisses: Cutover
    – Hosted: IMAP

Both Staged Migration and Cutover Migration uses batches and supports Exchange 2003, but the difference is that Staged is to use when you have more than 2,000 mailboxes and Cutover is to use when have less than 2000 mailboxes. In this question we have 500 mailboxes, so the correct aswer is Cutover.

    1. Dennis says:

All well and good, but the case states the following:
“Migrate on-premises mailboxes in batches by department”

So when reading that, I’d say no matter how small the mailbox count is that you need to migrate, I’d suggest using the Staged migration as it offers the batches, whereas a cutover does everything all at once.

So therefore I’m guessing, the correct answers are:
      On-premises: Staged Migration
      Hosted: IMAP

    2. Johnstone says:

Cutover requires full access to the mailboxes. The question explicitly says you do not have full access to the mailboxes, therefore it cannot be cutover. Also, Outlook Anywhere must be enabled to access the on-prem Exchange for cutover, another thing stated in the question.
