Eriol. I spent some time setting this up in a lab with 1 Hyper-V VM (Server 2012R2) and attached several VHDs to allow me to create a storage pool. During the storage pool creation I selected manual allocation and then tried to create a new Virtual Disk.
I was notified during the creation that ….

To use storage tiers, the storage pool requires a minimum of one automatically allocated physical disk of each media type (SSD and HDD)

As it says in the question you need to ensure that the storage pool supports tiered storage I would suggest this is why the answer is Automatic and we know that Fixed provisioning is also a requirement so the answer seems correct

As I had neither an automatically allocated SSD or HDD I couldn’t create it

This link is also a very good storage spaces demonstration

As per the video from James L…

It is recommended to use the same allocation type for all disks.
    Automatic is the default type.

Therefore I would go for automatic.
You also want as much as possible to be automated, so this is another reason why I would use this type.

You can only use fixed size also.
