    The weaker the signal, the lower the Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS). In order to use the highest MCS to achieve the maximum data rates the signal must be strong and clear. As you move further form the AP and signal degrades, the MCS shifts down from 64 QAM to 16 QAM to QPSK to BPSK. The closer you are to the AP, the cleaner the RF environment, the faster your connection can go.
