You have a server named Server1 that has a Server Core installation of Windows Server
2008 R2.
Server1 has the DHCP Server server role and the File Server server role installed.
You need to upgrade Server1 to Windows Server 2012 R2 with the graphical user interface
(GUI).
The solution must meet the following requirements:
Preserve the server roles and their configurations.
Minimize administrative effort.
What should you do?
A.
OnServer1, run setup.exe from the Windows Server 2012 R2 installation media and
select Server Core Installation. When the installation is complete, add the Server Graphical
Shell feature.
B.
OnServer1, run setup.exe from the Windows Server 2012 R2 installation media and
select Server with a GUI.
C.
Start Server1 from the Windows Server 2012 R2 installation media and select Server with
a GUI.
D.
Start Server1 from the Windows Server 2012 R2 installation media and select Server
Core Installation. When the installation is complete, add the Server Graphical Shell feature.
I’m pretty sure this is wrong. You can’t do an in place upgrade of the OS when you boot from the media. You have to run the setup from within Windows. See http://prajwaldesai.com/how-to-upgrade-windows-server-2008-r2-to-windows-server-2012/

Actually is it because 2008 R2 is server core that you can’t put the CD in and start the setup.exe? Sorry I may be an idiot on this one. I can’t seem to find any info on that.

I already tried it on my lab.
– You CAN run windows 2012 R2 setup.exe from a Windows Server 2008 Core Server and update to a Windows Server 2012 R2 Core.
– If you try to install direct the GUI version install program gives you a error.
A. Is working.
B. Not working.
C. Didn’t try but didn’t minimize administrative effort.
D. Didn’t try but didn’t minimize administrative effort.

I was undecided between A or D, because in order to upgrade a Server core version you have to stick with the Server Core version of Windows Server 2012 and then add graphical shell, but according to this article, despite it talks about Windows Server 2012 and not the R2 version, the correct answer is A, you have to run setup.exe and select server core installation.

Sometimes, I’m confused with the comments. I don’t know which option is correct, but if I’m to guess, Option D is logically correct.

Answer is A. Insert the disk and start setup.exe from command prompt. You cannot upgrade by booting from media.

Tried in my Lab.
A) works fine.
Tried D) and the following message comes up.
The computer started using the Windows installation media. Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the upgrade. (Do not select |Custom(advanced)| to perform an upgrade. |Custom(advanced)| installs a new copy of Windows and deletes your programs and settings.)
So you can’t boot from the CD and do an upgrade. You have to run the setup.exe from the installation media.
