Yes, you can add the DNS role from the Roles and Features from the Server Manager, but this is not the best answer in this situation. Carefully read the question and consider all the information given. You are deploying a new domain controller. You also want to deploy a DNS server to serve as the global catalog. The goal is always to reduce administrative overhead. The correct answer is to consider using the Active Directory Installation Configuration Wizard. While configuring the new domain controller, you can select to enable a DNS server as a capability of the domain controller.

Sorry to advise that answer B. Active Directory Installation Wizard is no longer available in W2012 R2 or W2012.

Also Global Catalog server is not part of DNS. The GC is part of Active Directory database of subset of all the users, groups, etc from all the domains in the entire forest.

The correct answer is A. Server Manager.

You posted a very good link which I reviewed and it shows that using Server Manager, you can configure AD DS role, DNS role and the Global Catalog feature.

  2. Steve D says:

A should be the answer. You would run Server Manager to install the ADDS role and the necessary binaries. After that you would run the post configuration task from Server Manager to start the DC promotion wizard.

    Answer is B.
The following is the mirrored question of the one above:

Your network contains an Active Directory forest named contoso.com. All domain controllers
currently run Windows Server 2008 R2. You plan to install a new domain controller named DC4 that runs
Windows Server 2012 R2. The new domain controller will have the following configurations:
    – Schema master
    – Global catalog server
    – DNS Server server role
    – Active Directory Certificate Services server role
You need to identify which configurations you cannot perform by using the Active Directory Installation Wizard.
Which two configurations should you identify? (Each correct answer presents part of the solution.
    Choose two.)
    A. Transfer the schema master.
    B. Enable the global catalog server.
    C. Install the DNS Server role
    D. Install the Active Directory Certificate Services role.

Answer here is A and D which cannot be installe using AD. If we mirror this question we get to answer B. What do you think?

    1. Saquib says:

Well, Jo, of course one can but even with server manager you can choose to add roles and features and have AD DS as a role which will again open Active Directory installation wizard.
Server Manager is opened by default for WIN2k12 and for AD installation you will have to manually open it, so you see, less amount of administrative effort.

  4. Yinka says:

I thought the answer was A as well but B is the correct answer. You only “install the DNS Server role, and enable the global catalog server option” after using server manager to install the AD DS role. At this point, AD DS is installed, so Active Directory Installation Wizard is used to configure both DNS and GC as default. Very tricky question.
