  1. DVS says:

Plenum graded cables are more fire resistant, but when they are exposed to fire they produce a toxic fume as a by-product due to the more resistant sheathing.

So when using Plenum graded cables you need to make sure there is good ceiling airflow – remember the saying “The fire doesn’t kill you, the smoke does”

  2. Marcio says:

Plenum rated cable has a special insulation that has low smoke and low flame characteristics. Plenum cable is mandated to be installed in any “air handling” space. For example, most large office buildings use the ceiling to return air to the AC unit. This qualifies this ceiling as a plenum ceiling, and all the cables that go through that ceiling must be plenum rated.

explaining what plenum is doesn’t match the answer. The ‘condition’ of the state of the ceiling airflow has nothing to do with weither you use plenum or not. You just use plenum in there anyway regardless of conditions of airflow.
