Cisco offers two Converged Network Adapters (CNA). These are called converged because they contains both an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for Fibre Channel and an ASIC for Data Center Ethernet as well as a third ASIC onboard, called the Menlo ASIC. Whereas the CNAs limit you to two Ethernet uplinks and two HBA uplinks, the VIC can create up to 128 virtual NICs. A customer could easily create a bladed server that looks like it has 40 separate Ethernet or Fibre Channel cards in it, and of course that configuration requires reduced wiring and far less power.
