Most wireless access points (APs) and routers automatically transmit their network name (SSID) into open air at regular intervals (every few seconds). This feature of Wi-Fi network protocols is intended to allow clients to dynamically discover and roam between WLANs.

However, this feature also makes it easier for hackers to break into your home network. Because SSIDs are not encrypted or otherwise scrambled, it becomes easy to grab one by snooping the WLAN looking for SSID broadcast messages coming from the router or AP.

Knowing your SSID brings hackers one step closer to a successful intrusion.

In a home Wi-Fi network, roaming is largely unnecessary and the SSID broadcast feature serves no useful purpose. You should disable this feature to improve the security of your WLAN. Once your wireless clients are manually configured with the right SSID, they no longer require these broadcast messages.

SSID broadcast disable is a load of old tishtosh. The SSID is still broadcast in the mandatory beacon frames, and an WiFi cracking toolkit can pull the SSID out of the air. Given that your network will need to be secured with WPA2 anyway, the tools to break in will be needed anyway.

What it does means is all your mobile users will have more trouble connecting, and will be broadcasting the SSID themselves out of the office as they attempt to connect. This puts them at greater risk of impersonation attack.

The better answer is Antenna Placement, but until Comptia update Security+, you’ll need to give the wrong answer to get points.

READ THE QUESTION!!! All it said was the organization does not want the name to be easily discoverable…the answer is obvious!!! The other answers have NOTHING to do with SSID names.

Most people in the business market have no idea how to search for an SSID other than by using the WiFi service on their PC. Therefore, disabling SSID broadcast would, in fact, make it harder for MOST people to discover the wireless network. Getting into semantics is how you nuke a test and bomb it…just saying.
