In fact , both /var/log/messages and /var/log/kern.log are true.
But because of “..network driver..” point in question .. I think true answer is /var/log/messages . Because syslogd got messages from various services on the system and log into /var/log/messages , and he will get message from service who is reponsible loading drivers into RAM and log this info to log file (/var/log/messages) . I think kern.log contains messages related with kernel itself . His error messages , and so on.
