    Answer: Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing allows multiple sources to transmit over a single fiber wire. The different sources can be using different protocols and even be at different speeds.

    It isn’t SONET. Synchronous Optical Networking (and the international version Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) is the basic communications protocol used over fiber networks to carry ATM, IP, and other data. SONET is at OSI Layer 1 (Physical).

    It isn’t Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) which is used only over copper, not optical/fiber connections. DSL, ADSL, and VDSL are all OSI “Layer 2”.

    It isn’t Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP). LACP (802.1AX, formerly 802.3ad) allows for managed switches to use port bonding or link aggregation to allow the bandwidth of multiple switch ports for one “link”.
