N is backwards compatible with A. When an A device connects to an N AP, the AP enters a “protection mode” and all devices in the service set use a preamble the A device can understand so it can reset its NAV timer to avoid collisions. This only valid if the N AP is in Greenfield Mode with A support disabled.
