OK, this question and question 85 are so close, it is just plain wrong. But thanks for the heads up on trick questions. Your format seems very clean so far…I am enjoying myself looking at these. I plan to re-take the Security+ exam soon ( failed with a 705 ). This helps a lot.

The key difference in these two questions- Validity of the cert vs. decrypting the message.

Well spotted. Same here. Marcus Vincent is dead right. These questions caused me to do a double-take
q1) Joe, a user, wants to send an encrypted email to Ann. Which of the following will Ann need to use to verify that the email came from Joe and decrypt it? (Select TWO).
So in here we want to DECRYPT. Which requires the sender’s public key (Joe) and the recipient’s private key (Ann)

q2) Joe, a user, wants to send an encrypted email to Ann. Which of the following will Ann need to use to verify the validity’s of Joe’s certificate? (Select TWO).
So in here we want to VALIDATE. The recipient (Ann) wants to make 100% sure that the email was indeed sent by the sender (Joe)

We know for sure that the Recipient (Ann) will require the Senders (Joe) public key as a form of validation.

Also, as a rule of thumb, we shall NEVER know the PRIVATE key of the sender. After all, it is private. If we do, then it means that the key has been compromised.
    So we have:
A.The CA’s public key – This is correct. We can check the validity of the CA PUBLIC, since it is just that…PUBLIC
B.Joe’s private key. We should never know the sender’s PRIVATE Key since it is just that…PRIVATE, hence we have no means to determine whether it is correct or not
C.Ann’s public key. Ann already knows her private key…and this will in no way help her to determine Joe’s public key (which is what we are after)
D.The CA’s private key. We should never know the CA’s PRIVATE Key since it is just that…PRIVATE, hence we have no means to determine whether it is correct or not
E.Joe’s public key – – This is correct. We can check the validity of Joes PUBLIC, since it is just that…PUBLIC
F.Ann’s private key. Ann already knows her private key as well …and this will in no way help her to determine Joe’s public key (which is what we are after)
So the answers are indeed A and E. Both Keys are:
    • From the SENDER side of things
    • And are PUBLIC
