    It can be called anything. Having said that, I’d encourage you to use auto_direct.

    When automounters were first created, the “master” file was called auto.master. Other files followed a similar pattern. For example, indirect automounts for home directories were defined in auto.home. When people made their own files, they would borrow from the naming conventions used by the files created by the operating system, so people tended to use auto.direct for direct automount maps.

    For reasons that are not entirely clear to me, at some point, Sun (and many others) switched to using auto_master and auto_home, etc. Thus users tended to switch to auto_direct. While you can call it anything you like, this is so incredibly common, I would be hesitant to call my file with my direct automount maps anything but auto_direct.
