Company Background
Charnham Technologies is a US based company that provides technology services. The company
is based in an office in Texas.
Existing Environment
Existing Active Directory Environment
The company network consists of a single Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) domain
named CharnTech.com.
The company has the following departments: Sales, Marketing, IT, Production, Development and
Research.
The Research department is located on the first floor of the office. All other departments are
located on the ground floor.
An organization unit (OU) exists for each department. Each departmental OU contains an OU for
the users in the department and another OU for the computers in the department.
All servers in the network run Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012. All domain
controllers run Windows Server 2012. All client computers run Windows XP Professional.
The network includes a Windows Server 2012 server running Remote Desktop Session Host (RD
Session Host) and a Windows Server 2012 server running Windows Deployment Services (WDS).

Planned Changes
The company plans to deploy a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). The virtual desktops will run
Windows 8.
All client computers will be migrated to Windows 8. Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) and
Windows Deployment Services (WDS) will be used for the migration.
New hardware will be purchased to replace the client computers in the Research department.
Business Requirements
Research Department
The company has identified the following business requirements for the Research department:
User settings must be migrated to the new client computers.
Each user will be assigned a virtual desktop.
User settings must persist between virtual desktop sessions.
All virtual desktops must be created from the same virtual machine image template.
Users must have administrative access to the virtual desktop to install applications.
An application named ResearchApp must be made available in the Start screens of the
Windows 8 computers.
All Other Departments
The company has identified the following business requirements for all other departments:
User settings must be migrated during the migration of client computers to Windows 8.
Client computer hard disks should be reformatted during the migration to Windows 8.
Client computers that are not PXE-capable must be able to download images from WDS.
All virtual desktops must be created from the same virtual machine image template.
Changes made by users to the virtual desktop environment must be discarded when the user
logs off.
New virtual desktops must be created automatically from a template.
Users must not be able to install applications on the virtual desktops.
An application named SalesApp must be deployed to the client computers used by the Sales
department. The client computer resource usage of SalesApp must be minimized.
