Packet filtering/ IP filtering
stateless filtering- device that does the filtering just checks the packet for IP addresses and port numbers and blocks or allows accordingly
stateful filtering/stateful inspection- more secure, all packets are examined as a stream, stateful devices can do more than allow or block they can track when a stream is disrupted or packets get corrupted and act accordingly.
