Understanding VTP operation and following recommended practice ensures that the benefits of VLANs can be fully realized. When configuring VTP, keep the following points in mind. VTP is in server mode by default, and the server mode has the ability to delete VLANs. It is therefore critical that a VTP password is configured on all switches. When you configure a new switch, be sure to attach it to the network before you configure the VTP domain name. If you configure VTP first, there is a possibility of wiping out all existing VLANs on your network once you make the connection.
