This article explains why an upgraded VMFS3 with a 2MB block size can still hold a vmdk of ~2TB.

But not sure why there would be a difference between thin and thick disk as far as expansion.

None of the answers seem correct.
If you upgrade a 1TB VMFS3 datastore to VMFS5, it’s still only 1TB so you can’t have disks >1TB.
In general upgrading VMFS3 to VMFS5 will allow VMDKs up to 2TB, but the upgrade doesn’t increase the datastore size.

It’s D because a THIN virtual disk can be bigger than the datastore size, so it can be expanded for more than 1TB. tricky question!
