The critical key is the difference between the standardlistcontroller and standardsetcontroller. the standardsetcontroller is meant to be instantiated with an object not typically covered by the standardlistcontroller. The latter can be used directly in the visual force page. This is wrongly described all over the web where the two items are equated.
