    1. Jeff Jeske says:

I read the document listed here and it abstractly states LUN CLONE and VOL CLONE. Other sources indicate that a vol clone is really a flex clone. I haven’t found a single netapp document that states a flex clone locks a SNAPSHOT.

My opinion is that the NetApp itself made the confusion in this topic:-). In 7-mode there were three cloning related command:

    1. vol clone …
    2. lun clone …
    3. clone …

As I know both 1. and 2. based on the same technology called FlexClone. My understanding is that the #3 is based on a different technology. I think it looks like a deduplication. Initially blocks of the original and the new LUNs are the same. This block sharing mechanism make it possible to clone only a partial of the original LUN.

In spite of that the NetApp saying that you need FlexClone license to perform the commands 1. and 3., but you do not need it for the 2nd. After that it’s really confusing, because they mixed the licensing and technologies and saying that this is the “technology”:-)

The question is asking about the “technology” and not the commands. According to NetApp the the #1 & #3 are “FlexClone technology”, while the #2 is “LUN clone” technology. Nice:-)

NetApp is using the same terminologies in C-Mode. So the good answer is A & B.

  2. Matteo says:

Yes, the correct answer is A-B even id Lun clone is called FlexClone LUN

You cannot manually delete a Snapshot copy from which FlexClone files or FlexClone LUNs are being created until the block-sharing process between the parent and clone entities is complete. The Snapshot copy remains locked until the completion of the block-sharing process, which happens in the background.
