Export policies determine access to volumes for NFS (and optionally CIFS) in clustered Data ONTAP. For volume access to be possible, a volume needs to be associated with an export-policy and that policy needs to have a rule that determines access. An export-policy without export-policy rules will prevent access for any volumes associated with it. As of 8.2, by default CIFS access is no longer restricted by export policy settings, so for new CIFS vservers in 8.2, export policies have no effect and only CIFS acls and share level permissions determine access. If you want ip based (export policy based) access restrictions for cifs to apply, modify the corresponding advanced level cifs vserver option with cifs option modify on the cluster. NFS access is always restricted by export policies, irrespective of this cifs option or version of cDOT.
Each vserver can have one or more export policies, and each export policy can have one or more rules.
Any newly created vserver will have no export-policy rules for its default policy, and therefore does not allow any access until a rule has been created.
Each volume in a vserver is associated with one of the vserver’s export policies. By default, it is associated with the vserver’s default export-policy. Access to a volume is determined by the export policy rules in the export policy the volume is associated with.
