    The default operation of IS-IS uses a 6-bit metric field, thereby limiting the metric range from 0-63. As networks have grown and routers have become more efficient, the need for smaller metric fields (to help SPF calculation be more efficient) has diminished. As extension to the protocol allows for the use of a 24-bit metric field. To help distinguish between the two types of metrics, the original 6-bit metrics are called “narrow” and the newer 24-bit metrics are called “wide”.
