    Chapter 6. SAN Design Considerations.

Note that in most SAN designs, redundancy and high availability is achieved in a different manner than in LAN designs. Instead of building a single fabric with redundant uplinks and switches, it is common to build two physically separate SAN fabrics. Servers and storage arrays are dual-homed to both fabrics, and fault detection and failover functions are implemented in dual-pathing software on the servers. If a server loses connectivity to its storage across the primary fabric, it reconnects to the storage across the alternate fabric. In unified fabric designs, this principle is maintained. The servers are dual-homed to two Cisco Nexus 5000 switches. One of these switches is connected to the SAN A fabric, while the other switch is connected to the SAN B fabric.
